Bacup THI Work Is Underway

The programme of works for the Bacup THI Project has now started.

The Pioneer Building is currently being worked on which will see repairs to the clock tower and roof, new shop fronts based on the original designs dating from 1914 as well as stone and iron works to preserve the heritage aspects of the building. The works to the building are expected to be completed by early February next year.

Cllr Leader Alyson Barnes visited the site and met with construction staff, saying; “We were delighted to win the funding for this project and to now see the work coming to life is really exciting. It will be a great benefit to Bacup and shows our commitment to preserving and maintaining the strong heritage features of the Valley.

Tim Webber, Director of Barnfield Construction and RTB Board Member also visited the site and commented; “We're pleased to have started work on the Bacup THI project and we look forward to seeing the completed scheme.  An improved look for the town will most certainly encourage an increase in footfall into the town centre and help the help the economic vibrancy of Bacup."

The next phase of work is scheduled to begin within the next few weeks and is expected to run until the end of February next year. It will see the RSPCA building at 33 James Street being worked on, with repairs to the roof and chimney, new shop fronts and new guttering.

Rossendale Borough Council won £2m of Heritage Lottery Funding for the THI Project in January 2014 to restore many of the historic features to buildings in Bacup as well as work on the public space. The programme of works is due to take place on various buildings in Bacup until early 2018.
