Bacup THI Phase 1 Works Nearing Completion

The Bacup Townscape Heritage Initiative Project Phase 1 work is now moving towards being completed with over £400k of work on the Pioneer Building and Clock Tower on Rochdale Road and the RSPCA Building at 33 St James Street being successfully carried out.

Investment into the Pioneer Building has new shop fronts installed and new sash windows fitted.

The Clock Tower on the Pioneer Building has gone through extensive, detailed restoration and stone repair work to bring it back into use after more than 50 years.

The RSPCA Building has had work on joist repairs, a new shop front fitted, new sash windows installed and the chimney pots restored to the prominent chimney stack.

Steven Lever, THI Project Manager welcomed the near completion of Phase 1 saying;

All the work carried out under the scheme is to reinstate, maintain and preserve the architectural heritage features of Bacup. The detailed craftsmanship that has been carried out in the work has been exemplary.

Barnfield Construction conducted the work detailed in Phase 1. They will now begin to focus on the work for Spinning Point and the redevelopment of Rawtenstall Town Centre.

We will be tendering out the work for Phase 2 (the REAL Building at 6-8 St James Square and properties at 31-23 St James St) by June, details of which will be announced in due course. We aim to appoint a contractor by August, start work in September and have Phase 2 completed by the end of the year.

June will also see two exciting training courses for local tradesmen to attend; Traditional Sash Window Course and Traditional Lime Pointing Course.

There will also be a guided heritage walk in July on ‘Water Water Everywhere and Not a Drop to Drink’ for local people who are interested in the project and the history and heritage of Bacup. More details on these training and engagement events will follow in due course.

We are continuing to work with Lancashire County Council on the highways scheme which forms part of the project.

We will continue to provide updates on the THI Project on the THI Website and the Council news site.

The Council is also establishing a newsletter for those who would like regular updates on the THI Project in Bacup. If you would wish to join then please email thi@rossendalebc.gov.uk
